Stuff in a WAPF kitchen...

Here is my cool amalgamation of the "*stuff* people say" and the "seven quick takes" phenomena of lazy blogging. Every once in a while I catch a whiff of my hardcore hippy tenancies and it is usually when I run into normal people at the rec center. An innocent question like, "Do you have any Tylenol?" or a simple statement like, "Everybody loves McDonald's gift certificates!" makes me realize I live on the edge of normal, right next door to you. So, here are seven things you find in my WAPF kitchen that you wouldn't find in my SAD neighbors' homes:

1. Raw milk, five gallons of it. Actually, it is sitting in my garage fridge. When I make a milk run, it is not to Megamart, it is to some guy's backyard with a giant illegal chicken coop and a Ron Paul sign. In fact, friends in the 'hood with the same milk hook-up call it "chicken milk" (meet our friends at their blog HERE).

2. Coconut oil, one partial and one whole gallon. We freaky foodies buy food that comes in giant plastic pails which our kids take for granted as in, "Get the brown rice bucket, son!"  My little kids like to sit on them when the hide out in pantry. They sit on the coconut oil or on the palm shortening or on the Real Salt bucket which is next to the grain vault, which leads me to...

3. Whole grains, like whole and grains. I used to be a white wheat devotee until I tried Kamut. In two weeks, I am picking up 75 pounds of whole kamut grain because when I say whole grain, I mean it, bro.

4. Four dozen eggs, 'cause I'm running low. Yeah, bring on the five egg and cheese omelet but hold the toast and orange juice. In fact, gimme a glass of whole raw milk.

5. Eight pounds of butter. It was on sale and if the lady ahead of me and not bought the same amount, I would easily have sixteen. My kids spread it so thick on their bread, it is more like butter with a little bread. We eat a half a pound in our breakfast oats. We eat butter like Michelle Obama wants to take it away because she does!

6. A five gallon bucket for Sucanat. I need to hit up my connection again because my kids drink two gallons of water kefir a week but never a Gatorade or Powerade or Petroleumade.

7. Sourdough starter. 'Cause you never know when you're gonna need to roll with your mad skills and cook up some chocolate cake, English muffins, biscuits, pancakes, pizza crust or other such goodness. Who would use a cake mix or "wham" biscuit dough? Sheesh...

So, peeps, what is in your WAPF kitchen?

Linking up to Fight Back Friday!

  1. Oh my word I think we're twins. Only we do spelt instead of Kamut. :)
I LOL'ed at the running low with 4 dozen eggs. We are TOTALLY the same! I always call my husband and say "Can you go pick up some more eggs soon from your friend with the chickens? We only have 5 dozen left!" We feel "safe" when we have closer to 15-20 dozen fresh eggs safely in the basement fridge. :)

    1. I read your comment aloud to my husband who knows about the egg things! I am always counting eggs, literally!

  2. This reads like my WAPF wish list! I am saving for the bucket of coconut oil :). My kitchen next week will have close to 30 pounds of onions! (sale at the coop, and I hoping I can sell 20 pounds off so I don't end up with 50!)

My kitchen currently has a gallon of chicken stock, and lots of mason jars with assorted leftovers, and a freezer with various packages of bones.

I'm cracking up :) My girls play in my "mason jar cabinet" since I need a whole cupboard for them :) And my whole top shelf of our fridge is raw milk from a farm we drive a half hour to each week :) And this morning I just told my husband (who is going to the farm for our milk after work today) - "I'm running so low on eggs - can you grab me 5 dozen?"...there were 3 cartons left :) And I have a half shelf in the fridge assigned only to butter! As I type this my daughter is dumping an empty cod liver oil bottle into her baby's "yogurt" and just told me her chicken stock is ready to strain in her play kitchen...she's 2 1/2!!!

  5. I really enjoyed this post. :) My list is a lot like yours, except minus the grains because we're on GAPS. We don't have quite so much of some things, but that's because it's just my husband and me so far. We do have A LOT of butter and coconut oil.
I would also add cod liver oil, homemade sauerkraut and pickles, and many cartons of coconut cream. :)

  6. not so much in the pantry, but we have frozen chicken feet, organ meat, beef and chicken stock, whole hens, and grass-fed beef in our freezer. :)

you could also do a post on what's NOT in your pantry...ie. canola oil, canned soups, boxed meals, etc.

    hooray for real food! :)

  7. When I told my husband I needed him to pick up some milk, and that he'd be meeting a lady in a truck in an empty parking lot to get it and that he'd need to say I sent him, he said, "I can't believe my wife buys milk on the black market."

He didn't bat an eye when I gave him directions to a house in an upscale neighborhood with the backyard full of chickens for our eggs.

  8. I think the fundamental difference between whole food aficionados (read: freaks) and the average American household when it comes to whats in your kitchen is: you.

If you find yourself often in your kitchen doing weird things like "cooking" then you probably are cooking something worth eating.

I want my kitchen and pantry to be like yours in several years when my family has a few kids running around (pregnant with first one) :-)

  10. Not to mention the umpteen jars of ferments sitting out in various corners of the kitchen, doing their thing... :-)

  11. Can I tell you how much I love all of you!?! There are so many ways in which the way I cook and eat is different and I am so glad we all have each other!
